If you've been following us on Facebook, you already know that SUPer Shane did it! The MR340 is the longest non-stop river race in the world for paddlers. On Oct 11, 2011, competitors from around the world gathered at Mile Marker 367.5 in Kansas City to race the 340 mile course down the Missouri River to Mile Marker 29 in St. Charles. They had a total of 88 hours to complete the course. On a Stand Up Paddle Board, Shane did it in 67 hours!
Shane was the first ever to enter and complete the MR340 on a Stand Up Paddle Board. Typically, SUP races on the coasts are 1-10 miles long with the race course laid between buoys on the ocean. Whereas rivers and their varying currents, wing dykes, debris, eddies, whirlpools, sandbars, and mandatory portage can provide a much greater challenge. Shane is the first athlete to introduce endurance river SUPing in the U.S. And with the help of St. Louis Sail & Paddle, he's doing it first right here in River City!
