Hobie’s Sailing Kayaks: The Adventure Island and Tandem Island

Hobie has again revolutionized multihull sailing! With their sailing kayaks, sailing becomes simple, fast and fun. And kayaking horizons our opened to include wind and speed. Using one of their sleekest kayak models, Hobie created a trimaran that is easy to set up and launch, fast and easy to use on the water, and virtually maintenance free. For one person it is called the Adventure Island (AI). There is also a Tandem Island (TI) for 2 riders! You can use the AI or TI as a single hulled paddling kayak or add Hobie’s patented Mirage Drive and pedal at 7 mph. Add the amas and akas (Polynesian words for outriggers), step the furling mast by dropping it into the slot, and you have a fast, fun trimaran. If you add Hobie’s tramps (trampolines) between the main kayak hull and the outrigger amas, friends can come along for the ride. Load the large bow storage unit and the stern platform with gear and you are ready for adventure. If the wind dies, furl the sail and pedal or paddle. If there is too much wind, furl half the sail. But this is a trimaran so the amas will prevent the boat from flipping over. If you are up for it, leave the sail out and take it to the limit! For 30 knot wind sailing, watch the video. When you are ready to head home, furl the sail, pop out the mast, unsnap the amas and akas and load everything on your roof rack or trailer. Another option, pop out the mast, fold the amas in against the kayak hull, and load the boat onto the light-weight, customized trailer.
