Hobie's MirageDrive

Based on how penguins propel themselves through the water, Hobie designed the patented MirageDrive®.  The two fins extend through the bottom of the Hobie kayak and are powered by the kayaker’s feet. Watch the video clip below to see how it works.

The MirageDrive in Action

Fishers love the MirageDrive because it does not scare away fishes like paddles and propellers.  Best of all the MirageDrive allows both hands to focus on fishing.

As the kayaker pumps her or his feet back and forth, the two MirageDrive fins flex and take the shape of a propeller blade then reverse their shape on the opposite stroke. This sweeping action (versus a complete revolution as with a standard propeller) allows the MirageDrive to the utilize blades in a shallower configuration.  This powerful propulsion attains speeds up to 7 mph!  Paddling alone cannot attain those speeds.  In fact, kayakers with the MirageDrive have known to tow broken-down power boats back to shore!

In rivers, the MirageDrive allows kayakers to efficiently pedal up stream against the current and then float downstream.   Shallow water is not a problem because the kayak’s draft is minimized by using short strokes with the blades against the hull.

In summary, the MirageDrive is:

  • A revolutionary new propulsion system
  • Pedal driven
  • Hands-free kayaking
  • An adjustable mechanism that accommodates a wide size range of pedalers
  • Durable construction of injection molded plastics, anodized aluminum, stainless steel fittings
  • A self-cleaning mechanism (resists wear from sand and other particles)
  • Easily removable for transport and storage

Speeding along at 7 mph.
